The Taxpayer Advocate Service works to help taxpayers with individual problems that they have not been able to resolve through “normal” channels. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS with the responsibility to get problems resolved.
The Taxpayer Advocate Service does not have the authority or infrastructure to actually fix any problems. However, their advocates know how to work with the various departments and units within the IRS to get problems resolved.
